Infinity, 2017
Bronze, wood wedges, work gloves
310 x 40 x 47 cm.

A column of bronze bricks, each imprinted with the word “Empire”, rises precariously from floor to ceiling; at its top, wooden wedges and a thick pair of work gloves are jammed in to stop the column from leaning too far and perhaps collapsing to the ground. The work recalls Costantin Brancusi’s famous “endless column”, and Carl Andre’s work Manifest Destiny (1986). Far from suggesting stability and permanence, like an allegory of human beings’ senseless quest for permanence, Infinity threatens to come crashing down at any moment.
